Practicing!

Miss B. got this great pic of me in the middle of practicing my nationals routine and I just had to share it… Remember when I got this outfit last year? I’m so glad to finally put it to use! FYI, I’m doing “Sarajevo 12/14″ as my short program song and that’s what this outfit goes with.

Me Skating

My ballet class is putting on the Nutcracker, and Hope and Lindsay (I know – they got along!? Only because Hope won Clara, and Lindsay thinks she upstages Hope anyway… just don’t ask…) decided to do a demonstration for everyone today. I couldn’t participate because Nationals are so close that my coach wouldn’t let me skip practice. :(

Hope and Lindsay

That’s all. Besides the fact that Kit-Kat freaked out and I found out they are actually *afraid* of something… well, someone… The Kidnapper? Yeah, I’m not sure how she got Kit-Kat to be scared of her, but I love her a lot right now.

It’s one hundered and nine degrees…

HAHAHAHA I wish. It’s more like minus thirty. Well not really, but if you spend your entire life in a skating rink, you sure feel that way at the end of every day. So, welcome to my life at the moment. Wondered why I haven’t been posting? That’s because I’m TRAINING FOR NATIONALS!!!! Which means… if I place high enough… OLYMPICS 2010!!!!!

So, yeah. This also means the press circuit has started. Wow. Sam told me to shut up and count my blessings because she’s a princess and gets this 24/7. So yeah, I guess I’ll shut up. But first I’m going to post this article from USA TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And for the record, I’m not taking a semester off school, I went part-time and I’m only taking organic chemistry and the lab. I’m in school from 8:30-9:30am MWF and 8-11am on Tuesdays. That’s it. It’s kind-of nice but also like, skating overload.

Flannery top contestant in the skate to Vancouver
“Nothing can hold me back”
Omaha, NE—November 12,2009: At first glance, Olympic hopeful Cate Flannery appears to be a normal sophomore in college. She lives in the dorms with a few of her friends, belongs to a sorority, and fills her free time with activities that will help her get into medical school. But even in the classroom, Flannery, a native of Kennebunk, ME, stands out. Rounding out her 28 AP credits, Flannery spent her first semester completing her basic classes and doing some intensive skating practice so she would come into Creighton University with junior standing. As a member of the honors program, Flannery had the chance to become immersed in her major the minute she stepped on-campus. And for a studious pre-medical student who is also hoping to compete in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, her advanced academic standing in all areas has really paid off. “Coming in as a junior and being able to take upper-level classes right away is what will enable me to graduate in four years while still being committed to skating, and pursue a biochemistry/physics double major.” Yes, double major—in the two subjects most college students hate. “Physics makes you think,” Flannery explains, “and biochem really applies to medicine.”
Placing third in Worlds last year and second in Nationals has Flannery set to be a top contender for one of the two spots the US has been offered in women’s figure skating. “I intend to take one of those spots.”
Flannery is nothing but devoted. She should have been out of the running already, as a childhood illness took her away from skating for two years. “I didn’t let that stop me from achieving my dream. It just made me want it more.” Flannery cites her coach, Jennifer O’Halleran, as the inspiration to work hard and stick to skating. “Even when I was at my worst, if I was able to skate, she made me and she wouldn’t take any excuses. I learned not to let myself take any excuses either.” Flannery even chose her college because of O’Halleran, picking a school near where O’Halleran had relocated. Flannery has taken a semester’s leave from school so she can focus on skating. Flannery was homeschooled during her illness, and continued to homeschool afterwards because it gave her more flexibility with skating and academics. “I was able to graduate early, and still practice more than most of the girls at my rink who went to regular school. And I needed to catch up.” In addition to her academic and skating skills, Flannery is also an accomplished sailor. She spent six months of what would have been her senior year of high school traveling the world on a ship with her Venturing crew. “I gained so much from that experience. I got to see things I never thought I’d see, and I learned that I can handle pretty much any situation that comes my way. I also spent most of the trip unable to skate, but I was able to practice ballet to keep my flexibility.”

Like an angry apple tree, I throw my apples when you get too close to me.

Honestly Ingrid… what else throws apples?! I love this line from Ingrid Michaelson’s new song, “Locked Up” off her new album. Okay, it’s not really new to me because Miss B. heard Ingrid play it at her concert last year and showed us a youtube video of the song, but this was its first release. It’s one of my favorites. Miss B. got the CD with some of her friends on iTunes (they split it). It was really exciting; usually we don’t get music the week it’s released.

This week has been… not too great. Well, actually just today. Last night I felt like I was coming down with a cold or something, or maybe my allergies were acting up. It’s definitely a cold. I feel MISERABLE. I went to skating practice because I didn’t have a fever, and Sam totally chewed me out for it. I know my body, okay? I know when I can and can’t skate. I skated fine. I’m used to skating under any condition. It’s basically like if you would be able to go to school or not. I would definitely be able to go to school (thankfully, we have a 3-day weekend) but I wouldn’t feel great. Same with skating, although I guess I can see how you are supposed to rest and not do physical activity. I just conveniently forget that. I’ve never gotten pneumonia in my life, Samantha! Then Piper freaked out because she thought I had swine flu. Which, I don’t. There’s a difference between the way a cold and the flu feels, and plus with the flu you have a fever, which I don’t.

Okay, normally this wouldn’t bother me, but I guess the laying around and contemplating made me even more annoyed. Em and I did have a good game of checkers, though. She won.

And I got another weird letter from Lindsay! What the heck?! This one said “Look to the western sky!” which Sam said was a Wicked reference. I’ve only seen the show once so I didn’t get that right away. Neither of us could think of anything that would mean, though. I don’t know if I like this club thing. All the secrecy/mystery is kind-of fun but frustrating too!

Sorry this sounded negative if it did. I imagine once I feel better, I may be more inclined to be positive. And are we there yet?

Here’s the album of me surrounded by tissue world:
Checkers!

Yay, me.

Yay, me.

Also, Ingrid’s new album has “The Chain” on it. Again. Just thought I would let you know since everyone in Ingrid-world seems to be obsessed with that song for no reason. She explained in one of the videos that it is a canon, which does explain why it’s so attractive. Still, I’m more obsessed with other songs.

Another MeMe

I got this from Lindsey, Sophie’s classmate.

1. What time did you get up this morning?
Miss B. is working welcome week, so we had to get up at 8:30. That’s actually late for me… I don’t have skating this week and I’m used to getting up at 3:30am!

2. What was the last film you saw at the cinema?
I have not been to a cinema here. The only people who ever get to go to movies are Kit-Kat! I want to see My Sister’s Keeper… but not with anyone else. Too many questions… And The Time Traveler’s Wife looks good; MB said it was really true to the book.

Grey’s Anatomy. It’s bad…

anything with apples… like cinnamon apples, apple pie a la mode, etc…

5. Favorite sandwich?
any panini. right now, I’m really loving reubens!

I have a great new sweatshirt! Um…jk…it’s not really mine…

Oh, wait! I DON’T HAVE A BED! That’s right! Miss B. ran out of space, so me and every doll after me do not have a bed or a room! This is a major fail. Under MB’s bed? Extra bathroom supplies, suitcases, books in a shelf thing, and printer paper.

21. What are you afraid of?
Nothing really. Nothing I would tell the grand online world…

22. How many towns/cities have you lived in?
Just one, until I moved to OWT. Now I’ve lived in 3: Omaha, a town near Cleveland OH, and Kennebunk, ME

24. Most embarassing moment?
odd questions…

25. Favorite genre of movies?
Action

This is what I spend my days doing…

Cate sewing

Except as a graduation present, I got to order an ice skating dress this year. Sweet! It’s the white one. This was my picture for LMPT Round 2, Clothing. The scene is kind-of fake, though. The leotard I’m sewing is actually the top to Kit’s new dress, and the extra fabric on the floor is actually her skirt! (Kat didn’t get one so she’s kind-of mad…) I love this sewing machine, though. Miss B. said I could have it.

And as an extra, MB insisted I post this picture of me. It was one of the ones we took for the Heroes round, but we decided we like the one of me smiling better. I bet you can tell why. It kind-of scared me. I look pretty sick!

Cate sick

Relaxing

Sorry I haven’t updated in awhile, but there is truly nothing going on. Besides skating practice, skating practice, and skating practice. But really, what else is new in life? I have a doctor here too, who is not as cool as Dr. Kolberts but will do for the short times I stay in OH. Who knows if I will even be here next summer, if I’m off doing some internship thing…? Anyway, once we got home and unpacked from our 15-hour drive from good old Omaha, we all changed into casual summer clothes and went downstairs to hang out with some other OWT girls. I have to say, I am getting along really well with most of them. I doubted I would, but they are all really accepting and nice. I really like Kira; she’s going to be a college junior next year and is a ton of fun.

One of us is thinking about entering the Little Miss Playthings Contest this year. We’re not sure who yet. Hope really wants to do it but Sam thinks I should. Honestly I don’t see why – okay, I do think I’m a bit photogenic, but some of the themes seem a little daunting. Like “Lines”. I am not a photographer! And “Heroes” – I don’t really have one. But it would be a ton of fun, so I’m thinking about it. Then again, I don’t want to compete with Hope about it if it comes to that point (but on the other hand, isn’t she like the star of *everything*? She’d totally go off on me about being spoiled if I did this, though…).

I’m hearing some odd things from Baby-Ruthie. They have capes, and they say they’re investigating something that requires sneaking around at night. I don’t really want to know what they’re up to. They just got back from Chicago, so maybe it has something to do with that. Baby has told me she’s pretending to be “Narcissa”. From Harry Potter?! By the way, did you know her real name is Ruby? I didn’t. I don’t see why she goes by Baby when she has such a pretty real name.

My Skating Costumes

Here are some pictures of my costumes!! They arrived in the mail while I was in France with all the other OWT girls. They say they are making an album soon, so I won’t post all the pics.

This is the dress I made myself that I wore to nationals:
purple skate dress

This is my dress for next year that I ordered:
white skate dress

Harper and Sam are here!!!

Yesterday Hope’s friends and my classmates Harper and Sam arrived. I am not sure why they didn’t come with us but they stayed in Chicago a few extra days. Anyway. Here are the pictures of me and Hope that I promised:
Hope and Cate
Hope and Cate 2

Hope found this giant box and came to announce to me that it was there (like I couldn’t see it, as it was right in front of me…):
Hope's news

Then she jumped up on the box and told me to take a picture of her in front of our window that overlooks Omaha. I am not sure if I actually got any of the view out the window though since it was pretty far away.
Hope being weird

Finally I convinced her to open the box and let poor Harper and Sam out! Except they were covered in tissue paper and looked like mummies! Sam tried to scare us.
Sam and Harper in the box
Samantha mummy

And finally, here are all four of us at college. Yay!
Everyone

Oh, and in case you were wondering… obviously I posted yesterday after finishing nationals and yes I did go to class, um, long story about how that worked out but… I got bronze! It was so exciting!! :)

Psycho Killer!

The first good news – my costumes arrived today! My mom said she’d ship them since she didn’t want them to get smushed in my suitcase. (The only problem is that now I have to take them to Omaha… but I assume the girls who’ve been there this past semester are expert packers, and I have a garment bag.) That was really expensive and I was happy she got them out to me before Nationals. The first one is for In the Mood, it’s purple, and I made it myself! The other one is for next year and I got to order it out of a catalogue. Emily said she liked the purple one better, but I couldn’t tell if she was just being nice. (Emily is just that – nice.) Harper wouldn’t say. I also met a girl named Sierra who is REALLY fun. She liked them both, too. I do like the purple one, but the white one is definitely more of a showpiece. That’s good, though, because I’d take it to the Olympics if I got there. I won’t get out of it. I know I shouldn’t be wearing it… but it’s so cool.

I am also OBSESSED with Rock Band. My teacher, Miss B. (who is really cool!), plays drums with me. We got a 436 note streak on “Psycho Killer” by Talking Heads. It’s such an awesome game and I’m actually good at it!
